### Dr. Sarah's Math 2240 Class Highlights Spring 2004 Page

The following is NOT HOMEWORK unless you miss part or all of the class.
See the Main Class Web Page
for ALL homework and due dates.

**Tues Apr 27** Go over LAMP Ch 4 Module 3 on Computer Graphics.
Then work on Problems 1 and 3.

**Hints on Problem 1**: Look at Section 1 example 1C, but use
rotation by -Pi/6. We also need to shrink the triangle as it
goes around, so, instead of letting M equal U.R.T, you need to add a
dilation matrix A somewhere (using, for example, the command
A:= Diagmat([1/2,1/2,1]); and M:=the product of the 4 matrices A, U, R,
and
T in some order that makes sense, and Movie(M,triangle, frames=18);
but adjusting the dilation so that it matches the problem.)

**Hints on Problem 3**: Try a rotation matrix composed with a
translation matrix.

**Tues Apr 20** Finish LAMP Ch 4 Module 1 Geometry of Matrix
Transformations of the Plane.
With a partner (groups of 2 around 1 computer), begin working on

Chapter 4 Module 1 Problem 1: Guess the transformation

Chapter 6 Module 4 Problem 7: Projection matrices

Chapter 6 Module 4 Problem 8 Parts a and b: Shear matrices

Go over the problems at the end of class.

**Thur Apr 22** Test 3

**Thur Apr 15** Finish
LAMP c6m3_v3.mws Chapter 6 Module 3 Eigenvector Analysis of Discrete
Dynamical Systems.
Begin LAMP Ch 4 Module 1 Geometry of Matrix Transformations of the Plane.

**Tues Apr 6**
Finish
LAMP c6m1_v3.mws Chapter 6 Module 1, Section 2: The Geometry of Eigenvectors
and work on
LAMP c6m3_v3.mws Chapter 6 Module 3 Eigenvector Analysis of Discrete
Dynamical Systems

**Thur Apr 8** Test 2. If you are done early then look at the
main web page, and read through the abstract info along with the last
PS.

**Tues Mar 30** 7.1 and 7.2

**Thur Apr 1**
Finish 7.2.
LAMP c6m2_v3.mws Chapter 6 Module 2, Section 2: Evectors Command
and begin
LAMP c6m1_v3.mws Chapter 6 Module 1, Section 2: The Geometry of Eigenvectors

**Tues Mar 23** Section 4.5. After this is finished, go to the
computer lab, read the postings on WebCT from Dr. Sarah,
look at the main web page, and read through the links
under Wednesday May 5th. Look up possibilities for
additional project topics via the web (be creative) and start thinking
about what you would like to do.

**Thur Mar 25** Section 4.6 and 7.1

**Tues Mar 16** Section 4.3.

**Thur Mar 18** Finish 4.3 and 4.4.

**Tues Mar 2** Section 4.2 continued.

**Thur Mar 4** Finish Section 4.2.

**Tues Feb 24** Section 4.2

**Thur Feb 26** Test 1

**Tues Feb 17** Continue 4.1 and then go to lab and take
WebCT quiz.

**Thur Feb 19** Meet in 205.
Lamp c2m2_v3.mws Sections 2 and 3 only, and c3m7_v3.mws sections 5 and 6 only.

**Tues Feb 10** Finish 2.5 and do 3.1 and 3.2.

**Thur Feb 12** Section 3.3. Then discuss test, Chapter 4
viewpoint, and the final project. Begin 4.1.

**Tues Feb 3** 2.3 and begin 2.5 via Lamp Chapter 3 Module 4
on Markov chains.

**Thur Feb 5** Meet in 205. Finish Lamp Chapter 3 Module 4 on
Markov chains and continue 2.5.

**Tues Jan 27**Meet in lab.
Go over hw. Continue Lamp 1.3 by going to
"Fitting a cubic spline" (go thru example 1C and stop at the end of it).
Review text comments in Maple.

Begin section 1.3 on fitting a polynomial, network and circuit analysis.

**Thur Jan 22**
Collect and then go over the previous homework.
Continue
section 1.3 on fitting a polynomial, network and circuit analysis.
Do 1.3 number 21 and then 23 as a contest. Go back to the lab.
