Dr. Sarah's Math 1120 Tentative Calendar Page - Spring 2018

The best way to contact me outside of class is during office hours or on the ASULearn Forum, as I usually check the posts daily, even on weekends. Jump down to tomorrow's homework which is located above the double red lines
Date     Work is always due at the BEGINNING of class. Additional hw TBA.
8 May - Tues
  • Final exam is 2-4:30, which is our assigned time.
  • 3 May - Thur
  • Create a Video revisions are due by reading day
  • 26 Mar - Mon
  • Test 2
  • 12 Mar - Mon
  • Read 8.5. Online Wiley 8.5 Practice Problems Parts 1 and 2 (4, 11, 12, 17, 24, Concep 6, Rev 71)
Note that in one problem "Assume both layers are _h m thick." should read Δ h. All but one these integrals are power rule. For the one that is not, concentrate on the setup rather than the integration technique (which is actually w-subs, then integral of the sum is the sum of the integrals, with one being trig sub and the other yet another w-subs!)
  • Study for quiz 5 on 8.4 Density and 8.5 Work.
  • 1 Mar - Thur
  • Study for quiz 4 on 8.1 and 8.2. 8.1 group work solutions
  • If you selected a Create a Video topic in Chapter 7 or 8 (first-come, first-served on ASULearn), consider working on a draft while it is still fresh.
  • 27 Feb - Tues
  • Read 8.4. Online Wiley 8.4 Practice Problems Parts 1 and 2 (1, 9, 13, 15, 17, 18, SYU 42, 43, 44, ConcepTest 9)
  • 26 Feb - Mon
  • Read 8.2. Online Wiley 8.2 Practice Problems Parts 1 and 2 (18, 29, 37, 40, 42, 54, Rev 5, 9, 10)
Hint: you'll need an improper integral for one of these
  • 22 Feb - Thur
  • Read 8.1. Online Wiley 8.1 Practice Problems Parts 1 and 2 (5, 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 24, 36)
Hint: you'll need trig sub to integrate sqrt(a^2-h^2) in Part 2, followed by half angle formula to be able to integrate, then a double angle formula to eliminate a double angle so you can convert back to h. #2 in trig sub sols has a similar process in a different setup that you can review.

    19 Feb - Mon
  • Test 1 study guide
  • 15 Feb - Thur
  • Read through the Create a Video assignment and write down any questions.
  • Write down any questions you have on the study guide. If you have a laptop, tablet or cell, you may wish to bring it with you to access online resources as a portion of class will be devoted to review.
  • 13 Feb - Tues
  • Read 7.5. Online Wiley 7.5 Numerical Integration Practice Problems Parts 1 and 2 (2, 7, 8a & 9a, 17, 18, 25, Additional 3)
  • 12 Feb - Mon
  • Work on hw for tomorrow or review for next Monday's test. As needed, review left and right Riemann approximations from calc 1.
  • 8 Feb - Thur
  • Study for quiz 3 on 7.6 (which can include our previous techniques). 7.6 Group Work solutions
  • 6 Feb - Tues
  • Read 7.6. Online Wiley 7.6 Improper Integrals Practice Problems Parts 1 and 2 (5, 7, 9, 11, 16, 19, 21, 24, 28 and ConcepTest 3)
Note: the practice problems will use w-sub repeatedly, parts, a known integral from the review sheet, partial fractions, and even trig sub. The solutions may not identify the method, but be sure you are able to.
  • 5 Feb - Mon
  • Review graphs and limits and l'Hopital's Rule, from calc 1 and prior classes, including graphs of ln(x), exp(x), exp(-x), 1/x, 1/x^2, arcsin(x), tan(x), arctan(x), cos(x) and sin(x), and review quiz 1 since similar integrals will arise in 7.6. Begin working on hw for Tuesday.

  • 1 Feb - Thur
  • Study for quiz 2 on partial fractions and trig substitutions. 7.4 Partial Fractions Group Work solutions, 7.4 Trig Substitution Group Work solutions
  • 30 Jan - Tues
  • Online Wiley 7.4 Trig Substitution Practice Problems Parts 1 and 2 (20, 24, 57, 61, and ConcepTest 5 and 7)
  • 29 Jan - Mon
  • Read the trig substitution portion of 7.4, review partial fractions, and work on homework for Tuesday

  • 25 Jan - Thur
  • Read the partial fractions portion of 7.4 and complete Online Wiley 7.4 Partial Fraction Practice Problems Parts 1 and 2 (1, 2, 5, 8, 9, 12, 16, 17, 39)
  • 23 Jan - Tues
  • Google Dr. Sarah to get to this page and then click on the syllabus link. Skim through and write down any questions.
  • Go to ASULearn and send me a posting in the Private Forum (only you and Dr. Sarah): what you would like to be called (your nickname / first name); your phone number; your major; any additional academic concentrations/minors; what you might like to do as a career; your non-academic interests and hobbies; anything that I should know about you so that I can best meet your needs as a student/understand you better
  • Also on ASULearn add a picture of yourself (click on your name, Edit profile) so that it is easier to get to know each other.
  • 22 Jan - Mon
  • Read 7.2 and write down any questions
  • Online Wiley 7.2 Practice Problems (adapted from 5, 9, 10, 26, 27, 30, 34, 35). You'll also notice some 7.1 problems mixed in.
Part 1 (repeatable with hints available, solutions after first try)
    Part 2 (self-reliance, 1 try)
  • Study for quiz 1 on substitution and parts. 7.1 Group Work sols and 7.2 Group Work sols

  • 18 Jan - Thur
  • Obtain the textbook for rental at the bookstore.
  • Read 7.1 Substitution p. 355-359 and skim 7.1 Group Work Target Practice Solutions

Part 1 (repeatable with hints available, solutions after first try)
    Part 2 (self-reliance, 1 try)
A given Wileyplus assignment will (eventually) be computed as: 91%Part 1 + 9%Part 2, where that score will be rounded up to the nearest multiple of 5 in order to try to minimize frustrations with typos or formatting, and instead have you focus on your understanding (for example a score that is greater than 80 up to 85 is rounded to 85).
  • Work some on refamiliarizing yourself with the concepts on the Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Derivative Review. We'll also briefly review these in context as we need them, but it will help you to strengthen those skills in preparation for their utilization.
  • 16 Jan - Tues
  • First Class.
