The intent of this scholarship is to encourage excellence in the field of computer science. An applicant must be a full-time rising junior or senior majoring in computer science; an overall grade point average of at least 2.5 must be maintained together with a grade point average of at least 3.0 for all courses in the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Applications must be supported by a letter of recommendation from a Mathematical Sciences faculty member.
The G.T. Buckland Scholarship was established in 1978 to honor Professor Buckland at the time of his retirement from the Department of Mathematical Sciences. The distinguishing objectives of this scholarship include the recognition and encouragement of outstanding achievement in the mathematical sciences. Accordingly, this award is presented to a rising junior or senior who has completed with distinction the calculus sequence and at least four other courses in the Department. Candidates may be nominated by departmental faculty members or through the Mathematics Honor Society (Pi Mu Epsilon). Applications must be supported by a letter of recommendation from at least one faculty member.
INEZ HARRIS MATHEMATICS EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP
The Inez Harris Scholarship is made possible by the generosity of Mrs. Sperling, a retired high school mathematics teacher and Applachian alumna (1934) from Shelby, NC. The intent of the scholarship is to encourage excellence in the teaching of mathematics at the high school level by attracting quality students to the mathematics education program at ASU. Candidates for this scholarship must be at the point in their program of doing student teaching during the coming academic year. Eligible students may be nominated by an Appalachian faculty member or may make direct application to the Scholarship Committee. Applications must be supported by a letter of recommendation from at least one faculty member.
The Paul B. Patterson Scholarship was established in honor of the late Professor Patterson, a former Chairman of the Mathematics Department at Appalachian. This scholarship is intended to recognize a promising entering freshman majoring in the mathematical sciences at Appalachian. Candidates for the scholarship are restricted to high school seniors. Qualified students may be nominated through their high school or may apply directly to the Scholarship Committee. In either case a letter of recommendation from a member of the mathematics faculty at the nominee's high school as well as a current transcript must be submitted directly to the Scholarship Committee.
The John W. Taylor and Mary L. Taylor Memorial Scholarship is intended to encourage rising juniors or seniors in Mathematics and Computer Science. Applicants should:
EDITH A. GOODMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Edith A. Goodman Memorial Scholarhsip was established in 1996 by Drs. Billie and Ted Goodman in memory of their daughter. Each year two awards are made: one to a computer science major and one to a mathematical sciences major. Scholarship recipients must be rising juniors or seniors and have at least a 3.0 GPA. Preference is given to female applicants.
